•Create calm surroundings:

Make sure your room is cool, quiet, and dark. To drown out any distracting noises, try using earplugs, an eye mask, or a white noise machine.

• Practice deep breathing:

Start by inhaling deeply through your nose, holding it for a moment, and then slowly exhaling through your mouth. With your attention on your breath and your body at ease, repeat this several times.

• Progressive muscle relaxation:

Each muscle group should be tensed for a short period of time, starting at your feet. Then, release the tension and feel the muscles relax. Tensing and relaxing every single muscle as you move up the entire body.

•Visualize a calming scene:

Imagine a peaceful scene, such as a beach or a forest, and focus on the details of the scene. Engage all your senses and try to immerse yourself in the visualization.

•Avoid electronics:

Electronic devices’ blue light might disrupt your body’s natural sleep cycle. As a result, give yourself at least 30 minutes before bed to go without using your phone, computer, or other electronics.

•Military method:

The military has a method called the “4-7-8” breathing technique that can help you fall asleep quickly. Here are the steps:

  1. Exhale fully making a whooshing sound, through your mouth.
  2. Now, close your mouth and take four deep breaths through your nose.
  3. Next, refrain from breathing for a count of 7.
  4. For a count of eight, thoroughly exhale through your mouth while making a whooshing sound. Thus, one round is complete. Repeat the cycle three more times for a total of four breaths.
